If you’re capturing 180° VR content with a Canon R5C, the easiest way to convert raw footage into an uploadable format is by using Canon’s EOS VR Utility. This guide walks you through the workflow from raw files to a DeoVR-compatible video.

Step-by-Step Workflow

1. Capture Footage with Canon R5C

  • Set the camera to 8K 60fps (preferred) or 30fps in 180° VR mode.
  • Use an appropriate lens like the Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye.
  • Record in Canon Log for maximum dynamic range.

2. Transfer and Convert with EOS VR Utility

  • Install Canon EOS VR Utility (subscription required for full-resolution exports).
  • Import the .CRM (Cinema RAW Light) files into the utility.
  • The software automatically stitches the left and right eye views.
  • Export as ProRes 422 HQ or H.265 MP4 for better compatibility.

3. Edit in Premiere Pro (Optional)

    • Import the converted file into Adobe Premiere Pro.
    • Apply color grading and stabilization if needed.
    • Ensure the sequence settings match 8K 30fps or 60fps, equirectangular projection.
    • Export using H.265 (HEVC) at a high bitrate (around 100 Mbps). See below for exporting AV1

4. Upload to DeoVR

  • Log in to your DeoVR creator account.
  • Use the recommended 8K resolution for best playback quality.
  • Ensure metadata is correct (stereoscopic 180° VR, safety settings).
  • Upload and publish.

Alternative option: Mistika Boutique

  • Import the Canon R5C raw footage into Mistika Boutique.
  • Apply stitching settings to correctly align the dual fisheye footage.
  • Use the Color Grade panel to adjust contrast, exposure, and color balance.
  • Apply any necessary lens corrections for a seamless VR experience.
  • Export in a high-quality ProRes or H.265 format for further editing or direct upload.

Exporting AV1

AV1 is the new efficient codec that provides improved visual quality and streaming efficiency.

We recommend using Da Vinci Resolve to export to AV1. We are testing other software and will update this article.

Final Tips

  • Keep file sizes optimized to balance quality and streaming performance.
  • Test the uploaded video in DeoVR to verify quality.
  • Consider spatial audio encoding for a more immersive experience.

By following this workflow, you can efficiently process Canon R5C footage for high-quality VR streaming on DeoVR with minimal effort.
