From Leo AI: The music video for Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" was directed by Francis Delia and released in January 1983. Produced on a low budget of $15,000, the video became a staple on MTV in its early years, significantly boosting the song's popularity and chart performance.
The video features surreal scenes, including lead singer Stan Ridgway’s face surfacing from a bowl of beans and an iguana roasting on a spit. It intersperses band performance shots with archival footage of bullfights and other scenes from Tijuana, Mexico. Carel Struycken (known for playing Lurch in The Addams Family) appears briefly as the video’s director within the clip. To emulate AM radio sounds, instruments were played through amplifiers rather than recorded directly, and Ridgway sang some vocals through a handmade bullhorn.
The video’s frequent rotation on MTV helped transform the track into a cult classic and the band's only US Top 100 hit, peaking at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100.
