Guide: Recording spatial video with Apple Vision Pro + iPhone 15 Pro Max
The VRO FILMS team have been working with the Apple Vision Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Find out how to create spatial video, and about the conclusions made by the VRO FILMS crew.
First, watch the Behind The Scenes video on DeoVR in your headset:
DeoVR is working on reading the native Apple MV-HEVC format. However, in this video, we have made an almost exact transformation of how video is displayed in the AVP viewer using immersive mode.
Editing process:
- Convert the spatial format to Side by Side using the Spatial Video Converter app
- Transform to Equidistant fisheye format in Mistika Boutique
- Create a passthrough with alpha packing to make the edges blurry
- Linear editing in Premiere
- AI-generated music. We like the end results but it is difficult to get a good result - it took over 20 attempts.
- 3D CGI generated in 3Ds Max
Conclusions:
1) The AVP camera generates a better stereo POV effect than the iPhone, however it has lower quality and it is more difficult to stabilize the footage.
2) The iPhone's IPD means the stereo effect is not very noticeable - only when looking at very close objects.
3) The method required to record and send the files to the PC is very complex and time-consuming. Also, the files have to be converted individually. It's a lot of work for average results.
