In the late 1800s, Gottlieb Kroegel built a homestead atop an ancient indigenous mound along the Indian River Lagoon in what is now Sebastian Florida. His son, Paul Kroegel would use the mound as a vantage point to view Pelican Island. The mound was constructed over centuries and perhaps even thousands of years by the Ais indigenous tribe. It was built from shells and refuse that gradually raised the land. Essentially, this mound is an ancient landfill, similar to the still existing Turtle Mound north of Cape Canaveral. the Mound was named Barkers Bluff, a name based on its previous resident who was allegedly scalped by the local indigenous tribe. Paul Kroegel's daughter, Freda claimed the mounds was roughly 1000 feet long, 400 feet wide and said it was taller than the local palm trees. This puts it somewhere in the realm of 20-40 feet high. Unfortunately, Paul Kroegel sold the land in 1908 and by 1913 the mound had been entirely destroyed. It's materials were used to build roads in Sebastian.
