Chimney Rock is located above the Platte River Valley in western Nebraska. It was called 'Elk penis' by the Lakota Sioux Indigenous tribe, but has gone by many other names, including Elk Peak, Nose Mountain, Elk Brick, and Chimney tower. It's most commonly known as Chimney Rock. This natural formation is the result of millions of years of erosion of what was once a large cliff face. The harder, more robust sandstone is what you see today. This 'inverted funnel' like formation was a sight welcomed by hundreds of thousands of migrants on the famous Oregon Trail. It was the landmark that signaled that the Rocky Mountains were nearby. Some of the oldest depictions show that it was once a taller formation, with a much longer spire. Today, the spire is around 85 feet tall, with a total prominence of 315 feet when including the raised natural mound. Early estimates of the spire's height, range from between 120-150 feet tall. But estimates in the mid 1800s may not have been very precise. Experts believe the spire has lost around 30 feet of its height since the 1800s.
