Paul Alexander, born 1946, fell ill with Polio in 1952 at the age of six. For the remainder of his life, he spent the majority of his time in an enclosed machine called a Iron Lung, which helped him breathe. This technology was relied heavily on during the Polio epidemic that hit in 1952. Paul Alexander defeated the odds when doctors assumed his life would be short. But eventually, he learned to breathe on his own, temporarily for a few hours outside of the machine. And he was able to receive his high school diploma, a bachelors degree, a Juris Doctor degree and even passed the bar exam and worked for 30 years as a lawyer. Paul wrote a book and in the end, shortly before his death, even began a tiktok channel. Paul Alexander surprised everyone with his persistence and longevity. And he is an inspiration to everyone. Paul Alexander died March 11th, 2024 and was one of the last remaining people worldwide who lived in an Iron Lung.
