Alexander the Great's sudden death after conquering a massive area spanning three continents took his generals by surprise and lead to a period of confusion rivalry over what would happen to the great kings body. It's suggested that Alexander himself wished to be buried in a temple of Zeus located in the Siwa Oasis, but several of his generals settled on returning the body to the Royal Tombs in Aigai, where his father was buried. But as the body was transported, Ptolemy I Soter diverted the body to Memphais, Egypt where was placed in a temporary tomb in a golden sarcophagus, presumably as a means of bolstering his own power with the people. Construction began in Alexandria on a massive mausoleum dedicated to Alexander called the Soma. It was completed sometime in Ptolemy the II's reign and may have resembled the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, as the Soma tomb was also considered a wonder that drew in notable visitors from all around the world. Ultimately, for reasons that I may get into in a future video, the great tomb and Alexanders body was lost, leaving us to wonder about where exactly it was located and what it may have looked like.
