The Navajo, Hopi, Santee Sioux, Alaskan indigenous communities and more across Native American Reservations in the United States have been facing a water crisis for decades. Between dwindling infrastructure, contamination and simply a lack of access to running water, as of 2016, 660,000 indigenous civilians have faced water insecurity. This has also lead to a lack of basic plumbing and unsanitary living conditions. In 2018, the number increased to 710,000 and since then data is limited, but without major advancements in aid to these communities, it's likely the problem has worsened since. Some estimates claim that 48% of people living in reservations face either water shortages or a lack of clean water. Meaning, potentially millions of indigenous United States citizens are affected. Some organizations like Dig Deep are doing what they can to help these communities, but more help is needed to resolve this problem. Raising awareness is an important step to achieving permanent solutions.
