Wakayama Castle was originally constructed in 1585 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a prominent daimyo (feudal lord) and one of the key figures in the unification of Japan. The castle was built on the orders of Hideyoshi to consolidate his power in the Kii Province (modern-day Wakayama Prefecture).

The castle is a prime example of Japanese castle architecture from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It features a main keep (tenshu) that is several stories high, surrounded by stone walls, moats, and various defensive structures. The design incorporates both practical military features and aesthetic elements.

In the early 17th century, Tokugawa Yorinobu, the tenth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu (the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate), was installed as the lord of Wakayama Castle. The castle thus became an important base for the Kishu Tokugawa family, one of the three main branches of the Tokugawa clan.

The original structures were destroyed by world warII. The current main keep was reconstructed in 1958 using modern materials but designed to closely resemble the original.

Gardens and Surroundings: The castle is surrounded by Nishinomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese garden that adds to the scenic beauty of the site. The garden features a tea house, ponds, and walking paths, making it a peaceful place to visit.
