This 8K VR180 documentary is part of the Within Reach portrait series. You sit face-to-face with ceramic artist Xiang Qinfa, a graduate of the Sculpture Department at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute who spent years in art education before returning to clay after a major rupture in life.
He once ran training programs of his own, later worked in Yunnan as both teacher and academic principal, and had planned to return to family life before life turned in another direction. Eventually, he came back to Chongqing and began again in a quiet, almost empty studio.
Rounded horses, cacti covered in thorns, tiny houses placed at the heart, and hollow-headed figures have become the recurring language of his work. As he shapes each cactus spine one by one and speaks about how clay helped steady him, you begin to sense that he is doing more than making ceramics — he is slowly rebuilding a place inside himself. Chinese and English subtitles included.
