Between the 1930s and 1970s, great efforts were taken to combat the massive swarms of mosquitos that plagued residents of Volusia county and Brevard, especially around the Indian River lagoon. They first tried digging ditches to drain the marshy areas, but this required significant maintenance and upkeep and they then resorted to using DDT to control mosquito populations. While this worked at first, mosquitoes became resistant to DDT within about a decade and greater measures were taken to control the population. In the 1970s, they started the C-34 Mosquito Impoundment project, which utilized dikes to encircle high marsh zones, meant to keep water in and flood the area to mitigate mosquito populations. In total, over 40,000 acres were lost from the impoundments.
