A new world terrestrial tarantula that is indigenous to the island of Cuba is called Phormictopus auratus, also referred to as the Cuban Bronze Tarantula. Even though there has been a lot of uncertainty about which species are which, this species is obvious in the Phormictopus genus. A few different tarantula species that are also found in Cuba have been given the scientific name P. auratus in the hobby. Auratus actually means gilded or embellished in gold in Latin.

Phormictopus auratus is the species that best represents Cuba. Phormictopus cancerides is the usual species outside of Cuba (Hispaniola). A number of undescribed species have been discovered on the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) in recent years, including the exceptionally dark Phormictopus sp. "south Hispaniola" as well as others with color-based names (sp. "blue," "green," "full green," and "purple." If these are distinct species or, as some claim, color variants of Phormictopus cancerides.
