Drive through one of the fajas (in 360 degrees) in Sao Jorge, Azores. Fajas are isolated coastal flatlands born from fire and collapse.
These small pockets of lands were formed by the island's volcanic past: some from ancient lava flows that spilled into the ocean and cooled into new ground, others from massive landslides where chunks of the towering cliffs broke away and settled at the water's edge. The result is a narrow strip of fertile land trapped between sheer rock and the Atlantic.
