Fantastic architecture of Poland. Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady in Wambierzyce. 3d 360
The Basilica of the Visitation (Polish: Bazylika Nawiedzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny, Sanktuarium Wambierzyckiej Królowej Rodzin, German: Basilika Mariä Heimsuchung) is a Baroque minor basilica located in Wambierzyce, Poland. Constructed between 1715 and 1723, it was designated a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1936.
History
The basilica stands on a hill where, in the 12th century, a wooden figure of Mary, the Mother of God, once stood. According to a 1218 chronicle, a blind man named Jan from Raszewo (Jan z Raszewa) miraculously regained his sight there, leading to an influx of pilgrims. In response, an altar, along with candlesticks and a baptismal font, was set up beneath the statue under a tree. By 1263, a wooden church had been constructed on the site.
In 1512, Ludwik von Panwitz built a larger brick church, but it was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Between 1695 and 1711, a new church was erected, but it began deteriorating and was dismantled in 1714. The current structure, built between 1715 and 1723 by Count Franciszek Antony von Goetzen, remains to this day. In 1936, Pope Pius XI elevated the church to the status of a minor basilica. Later, in August 1987, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński crowned the statue of Mary, officially naming her the Wambierzyce Queen of Families (Wambierzycka Królowa Rodzin).
