Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi originally envisioned his statue as standing amidst the Suez Canal, which was just opening at the time. He was inspired from his time spent in Egypt as a child, looking at the architecture of the pyramids and giant statues, such as the Sphinx. He painted a watercolor showing the pedestal and statue of a robed peasant girl carrying a torch, paving the way for Egypt's economic and social progress in Asia. His first imagination of the statue was entitled Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia or Progress Carrying the Light to Asia. But after Egypt declined his pitch due to the cost of the project, he revised his idea, becoming the Liberty Enlightening the World that we know and love today. Egypt instead built the Port Said Lighthouse in the place where Bartholdi's statue would have stood. And Bartholdi's project was instead funded by France and America.
