Its tale begins with the Carthaginians, who, as early as the 9th century BC, recognized its strategic importance and laid the foundations of its lower bastion. Centuries later, the Romans arrived, leaving their indelible mark by constructing the imposing main entrance arch and ashlar stone gates, transforming it into a grand ceremonial and defensive entrance to their walled city.
As time flowed, the Muslims took control, further strengthening its defenses and bestowing upon it the character of an "alcázar," a true fortress. They reinforced the existing structures, ensuring it remained a powerful stronghold.
Then came the Christian reconquest. The Alcázar underwent another significant transformation, particularly under King Peter I the Cruel in the 14th century. He saw its potential not just as a fortress but also as a palatial residence, adding to its grandeur. You can still wander through spaces like the Patio de los Aljibes (Courtyard of the Cisterns), with its ancient water storage, and imagine the life within its walls. Its impressive keep, locally known as the Torre del Oro (Golden Tower), stands as a powerful symbol of its defensive might.
Today, the Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla doesn't just stand as a monument to it
