📌 Fascinating Facts About the Ouse Valley Viaduct:
Massive Scale: The viaduct stretches an impressive 450 meters (1,480 feet) across the valley and stands 29 meters (96 feet) tall at its highest point.
Brick by Brick: It is estimated that a staggering 11 million red bricks were used to construct it.
At the time, the materials had to be transported up the River Ouse by barge!
Victorian Masterpiece: Built between 1839 and 1841, it was designed by the principal engineer John Urpeth Rastrick and the architect David Mocatta.
The Famous Arches: It features 37 identical semi-circular arches. The supporting piers are uniquely "pierced" (hollowed out in the middle), which is exactly what creates the famous, repetitive tunnel effect you see in the photos.
