Passthrough AR video is an incredible feature at DeoVR that takes immersive virtual reality to the next level. And now you can submit your own background images to make it even more awe-inspiring! This new DeoVR scene shows how you can change the background to anything you wish: Tribute To Quake - Metal Music in VR

Zed has taken passthrough AR footage of his original video and changed the background to dynamic, fiery footage of the original Quake game - perfectly suiting his metal version of the Quake theme, which he has extended with some awesome riffs and a solo.

But this backdrop could be anything - a sunny meadow, the solar system, a volcano - anything you can imagine, even live footage of your own living room or bedroom at home. Almost all modern standalone VR headsets are capable of this, and it became even more powerful following the release of the Meta Quest 3 and the Apple Vision Pro headsets.

Please note: Passthrough AR video is best on the Meta Quest 3 and the Quest Pro (stereoscopic color passthrough and the Pico 4 (monoscopic color passthrough). It is compatible with the Quest 2 and Valve Index, although it is monoscopic black and white. Passthrough is not yet compatible with Oculus Link to PCVR or the VIVE XR Elite headset.

DeoVR is at the forefront of VR technology and is improving this fascinating tech all the time. Our devs are currently training an AI model so that every single VR scene on DeoVR can be converted to passthrough AR video

A future update to the DeoVR app will soon support user-uploaded static backgrounds. To do this, simply upload the image you want to appear in the background.

For dynamic backgrounds, like the one above, follow these steps:

1. Download the master video and get the alpha channel
2. Create your CGI background:
  1. Create the model
  2. Add materials (and textures)
  3. Lights
  4. Animate
  5. "Solve" the camera (ie. place it so it matches the perspective of the scene)
  6. Render
3. Composite the original video over your new background composite, with alpha applied. Then add full resolution alpha to max out the quality.
