Guide: Playstation VR2 headset and DeoVR
The Playstation VR2 headset isn’t officially supported by DeoVR but we’re aware of workarounds by our users. Here’s everything you need to know about the PSVR2 VR headset and DeoVR.
Overview: how does the PSVR2 VR headset compare to the Quest 3 for DeoVR?
Compared to the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, the PSVR2 is inferior for general VR and the DeoVR experience, although there are some visual benefits to Playstation's VR headset. The blacks are especially good on the PSVR2, which looks pitch black compared to the greys on the Quest 3.
However, the lenses are better on the Quest 3, allowing a much greater sweet spot and better motion clarity.
The PSVR2 PC setup does not require the PS5 console at all. The PC dongle converts the PSVR2 device into a PCVR HMD.
However, there are issues with the PSVR2 controllers, meaning you can only use the PS5 gamepad.
Ultimately, we recommend the Meta Quest 3 as the best all-round VR headset when using DeoVR.
Pros:
- OLED screens mean the colors on the PSVR2 are exceptional
- Vivid colours, 3x brightness and OLED blacks
- You do not require the PS5 console to use this headset with PCVR
Cons:
- Requires an adaptor
- Cannot use the PSVR2 controllers - limited to the PS5 gamepad
- Key features such as eye tracking, HDR, headset haptics and adaptive triggers are currently disabled on PC
- Wired connection
- Fresnel lenses mean you need to find the sweet spot, plus there are issues with clarity compared to the Quest 3 pancake lenses
- More expensive than the Quest 3
How to get DeoVR working with the PSVR2 headset
- You will need the PSVR2 to PC adapter (This adapter allows you to connect the PSVR2 to act as a PCVR headset)
- Set up the dongle to connect your PSVR2 headset
- Access the DeoVR app through SteamVR via PCVR
- Important: Currently, the only way to use the DeoVR app is with the PS5 DualSense Controller
Please note: DeoVR does not officially support the PSVR2 headset, so we cannot give specific advice on issues related to this equipment set-up.
How to fix the frozen controller issue
Some users have an issue where the PSVR2 Sense Controller is not recognized. This is because Sony cannot connect the PlayStation VR2’s controllers. They need to connect to your PC using Bluetooth, but Sony does not provide any form of Bluetooth radio. The Verge has looked at this issue in more detail.
The current recommended solution is to connect the PS5 DualSense Controller via Bluetooth and use that instead to navigate through DeoVR.
