DeoVR is proud to annouce that we have officially upgraded our infrastructure to support native 10-bit encoding and increased maximum bitrates. Here is everything you need to know about what this means for your viewing experience.

What’s New in the Update?

We’ve overhauled how video files are processed and delivered to your headset:

  • 10-Bit Streaming Support: If a creator uploads a 10-bit master file, it can now be processed and delivered as a 10-bit stream instead of being converted to 8-bit.
  • Higher Maximum Bitrate: The maximum bitrate used by our streaming encoder has been increased. This allows more visual information to be preserved and reduces compression artifacts in scenes.
  • Bit-Depth Tracking: Our system now automatically detects and tracks the bit depth of uploaded videos. This helps ensure that compatible content is processed with the correct settings.
  • Automatic Tags: Videos that meet certain criteria will now automatically receive tags such as 10bit and highbitrate, making it easier to identify higher-quality content.

Understanding the Tech: 10-Bit & High Bitrate

If you aren’t a video engineer, these terms might sound like jargon. Here is why they actually matter for your eyes:

What is 10-Bit Color? Color bit depth refers to the amount of color information in a video.

  • 8-bit video can display roughly 16.7 million colors.
  • 10-bit video can display over 1 billion colors. This increase in color data significantly reduces "banding"—the visible lines sometimes seen in gradients like skies or shadows—resulting in much smoother transitions.

What is High Bitrate?

Bitrate describes how much data is used to encode video per second.

  • More detail to be preserved
  • Fewer compression artifacts
  • Cleaner images during complex or fast-moving scenes

FAQ

  • Do I need to update the DeoVR app?
No. These improvements happen on our servers, so compatible videos will automatically play in higher quality in the current app version.

  • Will older videos receive these upgrades?

    • High Bitrate: Videos processed or re-processed after February 22 will use the updated bitrate limits and receive the highbitrate tag when applicable.
    • 10-Bit: Will keep you updated once we have more info
  • I’m a creator. What should I do?
If possible, upload high-quality 10-bit masters. Our system will automatically detect the format and process the video accordingly.

  • What devices are supported?
10-bit playback depends on device and decoder support. Most modern VR headsets support 10-bit HEVC playback, but actual output quality may vary depending on the hardware and display panel.
If your headset or decoder does not support 10-bit playback, the video will still play normally using standard decoding.

  • When Will You Notice the Difference?
The improvements are most noticeable in:
    1. videos with smooth gradients (sky, fog, lighting transitions)
    2. skin tones and shadows
    3. videos with high motion or complex detail

In simpler scenes the difference may be subtle, but in high-quality VR footage it can significantly improve visual smoothness.
High bitrate is applied dynamically depending on the source file, resolution, and encoding profile. Not every video will use the same bitrate, but the system now allows significantly higher ceilings than before.
