This 14th February, Barcelona’s Gràcia district is hosting a carnival to celebrate Valentine’s Day! This is an affluent neighbourhood where property prices are sky-high (averaging €12,000 per square metre) and and dotted with century-old aristocratic mansions. The residents are predominantly middle class and above, and the neighbourhood spirit is excellent.
This year’s carnival features the Pink Queen! The usually demure banker’s daughter transforms into a playful pink sprite, whilst the lawyer dons a quirky accessory. The float parades across eight neighbourhood squares are a real treat to watch, with the winner receiving a year’s supply of free bread from the local bakery. Neighbours cheerfully tease one another with placards, whilst the sounds of street pianos and flamenco dancing intertwine, creating an atmosphere of pure romance.
Fun facts: The old houses bearing ‘Gràcia Vella’ nameplates are full of character; at 4 pm, the whole town falls silent to listen to the laughter; and the limited-edition ‘carnestoltes’ cakes at the corner bakery are absolutely delicious.
Practical tips: Dress up in something outrageous to blend into the carnival spirit, and head to Plaça de la Vila to sip authentic Catalan cava.
