On September 12th 1962, President John F. Kennedy told the world "We choose to go to the moon." in his famous speech that ignited the Apollo program which would later land Americans on the Moon and win the space race. But many aren't aware that behind the scenes, Kennedy wasn't enthusiastic about the Apollo program or the United States venture into space altogether. We were already being beaten by the Soviet Union, who successfully launched Yuri Gagarin into orbit on 12 April 1961, aboard the Vostok 1. This along with a recent failure at the Bay of Pigs, encouraged Kennedy to take a risk with the Apollo program in an effort to unite the American people and increase morale. But just a year later, and after billions of dollars spent, JFK was considering loosening his plan for a moon mission. There may have even been an indication he wished to cancel the Apollo program altogether. On September 20th 1963, JFK announced a new trajectory for America's space program. He wished to cooperate with the Soviet Union in an expedition to reach the Moon. This came as a surprise to many, but also suggested we were moving towards a more peaceful path, rather than continued competition and hostility.
Unfortunately, just two months after his speech, President Kennedy was assassinated. His proposal was overshadowed by his death and never took root. The United States would never cooperate with the Soviets and the Apollo program continued, receiving even more funding to launch us to the moon.
