On August 6th, 1945, the atomic bomb Little Boy was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. It detonated above the city filled with around 340,000 inhabitants. The city itself was largely constructed of wood. The bomb immediately set numerous structures alight, up to 4 miles away from the blast. The fires quickly spread and caused convection, which spurred winds to drive the flames spread further and faster, eventually forming an enormous firestorm which enveloped and incinerated 4.4 square miles of the city. Many who survived the initial blast were unable to escape this giant fire tornado. There are reports of citizens jumping into the river to escape its heat. The firestorm raged between 4-6 hours AFTER the atomic blast. The massive pyrocumulus cloud that formed over the city of Hiroshima is often mistaken for the mushroom cloud immediately following the nuclear blast.
