On May 7, 2024, it was exactly 200 years since Beethoven's 9th Symphony premiered (1824). To pay tribute to this beautiful hymn - 'Ode an die Freude' - as many Mechelen residents as possible sang the European national anthem at the top of their lungs on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 on the Cultuurplein under the tower.
In the background, you will see the Sint-Rumbolds cathedral lit up by the evening sun.
This short clip shows the last part of the song where both choir and audience were singing together.
