Changmen, one of the Eight Gates of ancient Suzhou, was first established by Wu Zixu when he built the grand city of Helu. It was not only a military stronghold but also a symbol of prosperity. In the opening of Dream of the Red Chamber, Suzhou’s glory was immortalized with the words: “There is a city called Changmen, one of the richest and most romantic places in the world of dust.”

Today, as the morning sun rises, golden beams of light pierce through the arch of Changmen, casting a divine glow on the centuries-old walls. Cyclists pass beneath, their fleeting silhouettes mingling with the gate’s enduring presence. In that moment, history and daily life intersect, creating the sensation of crossing through time itself.

Over the centuries, Changmen has witnessed countless transformations: once called “Po Chu Gate” during the Wu–Chu wars, later reinforced with a barbican by Zhang Shicheng in the Yuan dynasty, rebuilt as a triple arch in the Republic era, and restored again in 2006. Each stone carries the weight of Suzhou’s legacy.

Changmen is more than just a city gate—it is a gate of time. Through its golden light, you step not only into a passage of stone, but into 2,500 years of Suzhou’s splendor.
