Located in the center of Jongno-gu Ikseon-dong is one of the oldest hanok ( traditional Korean houses) villages in Seoul.
In his 100 years + old history it escaped several urban renovations that would have transform it into another business buildings area like most of the surrounded neighborhoods. In the 2000's yet another redevelopment plan was scheduled by the Seoul metropolitan authorities, that leaded to a fierce debate and finally to abandon the plan and forbid new construction project in the village.
For some years and as a consequence of the law the village was declining, to the point that some houses were abandoned by the owners, some others left on a bad shape.
At the beginning of the 2010's the place was rediscovered by young cafés and restaurant owners, attracted by its unique location just a few meters away from Jongno 3(sam)-ga ( 종로3가역) and by the charming and preserved atmosphere.
Today most of the residents left the area, and it's almost 100% dedicated to cafes, restaurants, breweries, tourists aimed craft shops..
