This 8K VR180 documentary is part of the Within Reach portrait series. You enter the Chongqing studio of painter Qian Kun, watch him draw each line by hand, and hear how he moved from traditional figure painting to Pixiu, a Chinese auspicious beast.
From reading comic books as a child and studying traditional figure painting, to being told, “Young man, I advise you to stop painting”; from designing auspicious beasts for a crafts factory in Yantai to entering the art market as a professional painter around 2011, Qian gradually found his direction. For more than a decade, he has continued painting Pixiu in many forms—fierce, prosperous, and sometimes “cute.”
This is a face-to-face conversation about tradition, the market, and personal style: when “the predecessors stand before you like mountains,” how does a painter find a subject of his own—and keep painting it?
