📜 History of the Trail & Environment:
The Oak Savannah Trail showcases an incredibly rare and historically vital ecosystem. Before European settlement, millions of acres across the Midwest and Southern plains were covered in oak savannahs—a unique transition zone between dense eastern forests and vast western prairies.
This specific habitat relies entirely on periodic wild or prescribed fires to thrive; the fire clears out choking brush and invasive saplings, allowing the thick, fire-resistant bark of mature oaks to survive while opening up sunlight for prairie grasses. Managed meticulously by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission on the historic grounds of Fort Chaffee, this loop serves as a living laboratory showing the beauty of a carefully restored, fire-adapted Arkansas landscape.
