Around 700 CE, the Pallava king Rajasimha raised a temple to Shiva in Kanchipuram: sandstone on a granite base, and one of the earliest free-standing stone temples in South India — the model from which the great Dravidian temples that followed would grow. When the Chalukya king Vikramaditya II captured Kanchi a few decades later, his records say he entered the city "without destroying it", and he recorded his gifts to this temple in an inscription on one of its pillars.

In 360°, start high above Kanchipuram as the drone comes down towards the temple's stepped tower, then walk in through the entrance, past its carved guardian figures, into the enclosed courtyard. An unbroken ring of small shrine cells runs all around you, their sandstone walls crowded with gods and their pillars carved with rearing lions. Step into the sanctum as a priest performs the puja, and stay as the lamps come on at dusk.
