Japan Miyagi Tagajo1300-year-old Ruins
Tagajo Castle, located in Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a nationally designated Special Historic Site and is the site of an ancient castle and fortification from the Nara and Heian periods, and the former capital of Mutsu Province. It is considered one of the "Three Great Historic Sites of Japan," alongside the Heijo Palace ruins in present-day Nara Prefecture and the Dazaifu ruins in present-day Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu.
The South Gate was restored in recent years, coinciding with the 1300th anniversary of its founding (2024).
The Tagajo Monument (Tsubonoishibumi), a National Treasure, is also located here.
During the Heian period, Heian-kyo (present-day Kyoto) was the largest city, but the second largest was Hiraizumi (present-day Iwate Prefecture).
