📜 History & Geology of the Trail:
The Rock House Cave Trail offers a direct window into millions of years of natural and human history. The shelter itself is formed from 315-million-year-old Hartshorne Sandstone, sculpted over millennia by natural weathering and water erosion.

For nearly 8,000 years, Native Americans utilized this giant natural cavern as a seasonal home and sacred gathering place. The most remarkable artifacts remaining are the ancient pictographs (rock paintings) left on the rock ceiling. Created using a mixture of red iron-oxide clay and natural binders like animal fat, these paintings date back 500 to 1,000 years to the Woodland and Mississippian periods. As you look around the interior of the shelter in 360 degrees, you are standing exactly where ancient cultures cooked, lived, and left behind vibrant visual records of their connection to the Arkansas River Valley.
