Electrofishing briefly affects nearby fish so trained crews can collect and identify the stream community. During this survey, we examine the different habitats fish use, watch the crew work upstream, and take a closer look at darters, madtoms, minnows, suckers, sunfish, and other aquatic life.
Large fish and species that can be confidently identified in the field are returned to the stream. The remaining sample is preserved for detailed identification and study in the laboratory. Together, these species help biologists evaluate stream conditions and track how the fish community changes over time.
