Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, originally founded as Serdica by the Thracian Serdi tribe around the 8th century BC, which later flourished as a Roman city before becoming Sredets under Bulgarian rule in 809, renamed Sofia in 1376 after its basilica, enduring Ottoman occupation until liberation in 1878 when it was designated the national capital.
