The Calvary in Banska Stiavnica is one of the most beautiful baroque Calvary in Europe. The construction began in 1745 and was completed in 1751. This calvary is a complex of 3 churches and 22 chapels with precious painting decorations.
The initiator of the construction was Pope Franz Perger (1700 - 1771)
He built it thanks to the gifts of rich miners, dignitaries and simple mining families.Total costs of Calvary Banska Stiavnica reached 25 899 Golds.
Banska Stiavnica is situated in central Slovakia. The town is situated in the centre of a huge crater, created by the collapse of an ancient volcano.Town of Banska Stiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity gained the status as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993.
