The yellow gold of southern Sweden
Rapeseed comes in two varieties, autumn (winter) rape and spring (summer) rape, depending on the season
when they are sown. Fall rape blossoms in May while spring rape blossoms in June.
The harvest takes place at the end of July or at the beginning of August. Spring rapeseed is hardier and
requires less fertilization, while autumn rapeseed gives a significantly higher yield and has a higher
oil content. Of the two, autumn rape is today the most common in Sweden. The oil that is pressed
or extracted from the small black seeds of the rape plant can be used partly as cooking oil and
partly as fuel. Rapeseed is globally the third most important oil crop, after soybean and oil palm.
The flour that is a residual product of the pressing is used in animal feed.
Smygehuk is a harbor and fishing village on the south coast of Skåne in Östra Torps parish in
Trelleborg municipality, near Smygehamn. Smygehuk is Sweden's and the Scandinavian
peninsula's southernmost cape and is a well-visited tourist destination with over 200,000
visitors every summer.
Söderslätt – a Scanian gem
Söderslätt is perhaps best known for its fertile soil on an open and flat landscape. But here you will
also find beautiful fine-grained sandy beaches, lovely winding forest roads, beautiful castles,
Sweden's most southerly cape and actually, after all, the occasional hill. Especially recognized by
all cyclists of the plain.
