Karen-Ann is 26 years old. She belongs to the Sami people. The only indigenous people left in Europe. She has lived a life away from the herding of reindeer which was taken care of by her brothers & father. Reindeer is the family’s main income, so everything is dependent on them. But this winter things changed. Due to the rapid shifts in temperatures, the snow was filled with ice layers which resulted in the reindeer could not find food. Their very sensitive attitudes made them run south. Many died and the Sami community was in distress because the reindeer were really suffering. Karen Ann’s family decided to feed the reindeer themselves. This was the first time and all were afraid that they wouldn’t be able to go back to their natural state relying on their natural impulses. They got sick and she was the one who tried human medicine out on the reindeer, whispering to them. After a while, they made it through. They gained recognition and started herding among her father and brothers slowly leading the herd back to Norway where they came to life themselves.
