Welcome to the heart of the Jaws of Borrowdale, the narrowest and most dramatic gateway to the valley. We begin our journey at the National Trust Bowder Stone car park. As we follow the signposted 600-metre path, the canopy closes overhead. This woodland carries a distinct "rainforest vibe"—rich, emerald-green mosses and ancient ferns blanket the forest floor. The path guides us past the atmospheric remnants of an old slate quarry. Look up at the sheer rock faces cutting through the greenery—a favourite spot for local climbers and abseilers. As the trail rounds a final bend, the woodland opens up to reveal a true geological marvel: The Bowder Stone. Standing an impressive 9 metres high and weighing an estimated 2,000 tonnes, this massive andesite lava boulder seems to defy gravity. It sits impossibly balanced on its narrowest edge, looking as though it might tip over at any moment. Follow the camera up the famous metal stairs bolted directly into the rock face. As we ascend to the very top of the boulder, we emerge above the treeline. Look all around you: a stunning, panoramic view of the Borrowdale valley.
