In Japan, there is a custom of worshiping the spirits of ancestors during Obon, and Bon dances are held all over the country, but in the Nishimonai Bon Dance, the faces of the dancers are not visible. This is thought to represent the spirits of ancestors. It was first performed in Tokyo in 1935 and surprised many Japanese people. It was the first Bon Odori dance in Japan to be designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
