Ojos Negros owes its name to the 'black holes', the pits and holes of the open-pit mines that have marked its orography since ancient times. The Romans were already extracting iron from the land, but it was the 20th century that gave the "Sierra Minera" its true character.
The Sierra Menera Company settled in Ojos Negros for more than 80 years, from 1900 to 1986, creating a neighborhood for its miners on the edge of the town.
The first workers' houses were built without order or order, most of them in the neighborhood known today as Relojería, near the mines. The subsequent construction of the hospital and the inauguration of a small Civil Guard barracks encouraged the development of this area.
The development of the mining town continued for several decades, giving rise to the different neighborhoods that make up the mining town (Ojos Negros): the watchmaking district, the hospital district, the management district, the station district...
Finally, the Company designed what is known as the Centro district, a perfectly structured settlement, with all the houses identical, two-storey terraced houses with gabled roofs. In the middle of the 20th century, a church, a commissary for the miners, a cinema and a casino were built to guarantee their leisure time on weekends.
A few years later the swimming pool was inaugurated, the first one opened in the whole region.
