Litchfield National Park is about 100 km south of the Northern Territory's capital Darwin. The Cascades loop walk is a beautiful little hike which offers a fascinating glimpse into two very different ecological niches represented in the Top End: while ascending to the upper section of Cascades creek the track winds through very dry savannah woodland with burnt out patches of spear-grass, the descend to the lower section along the rocky creek-bed leads to a thick rainforest jungle dominated by ferns, Carpentaria palms and Melaleuca trees. A highlight of this hike is a swim in one of the many small rock pools of Cascades creek.
