📜 History of the Trail & Nature Center:
The Field and Forest Trail winds through a 170-acre tract of land packed with local history. Before it became the pristine nature center sanctuary visitors enjoy today, these very grounds were part of the historic Fort Chaffee military installation, which saw heavy use throughout World War II, the Cold War, and beyond. Long before the military stepped in, the land was primarily comprised of family homesteads and active farm fields. This specific trail is designed to show a living timeline of ecological succession—highlighting how old, cleared farmland naturally recovers and heals itself back into a thriving, native Arkansas forest ecosystem.
