Taiwan upgraded the main rail system by converting the old gas Engines to electric and raised the tracks. The upgrade made the rail system environmentally cleaner and safer. Many cities took this opportunity modernize their Rail stations.
The old rail station often build over but some have been designated as historical landmark. The old rail station in Tai Chung is a historic landmark but it is not sitting dormant. The city turned it into a tourist destination by making part of it into a museum and other parts into shops and restaurants. On weekends they turn the station and it's platforms into a flea market / craft fair.
