Arcen Is Changing Fast! | Dike Reinforcement Update September 2026

In this September 2026 update, we take another aerial look at the major dike reinforcement project in Arcen, Limburg.

Along the River Meuse, extensive work is being carried out to improve Arcen's protection against future flooding. The project includes strengthening existing dikes and flood defences, relocating part of the dike in Arcen North, and restoring the Lingsforterbeek stream.

Arcen is a particularly challenging location because homes, restaurants, tourism, nature and historic sites are all located close to the river. For this reason, several different types of flood protection are being used, including traditional dikes, retaining walls, glass barriers and self-closing flood defences.

Construction resumed after the summer break on 17 August 2026, with major work continuing in the centre of Arcen, around Maasstraat and along the riverside promenade. New glass flood barriers are planned at several locations, while another section uses an innovative self-closing barrier.

Join me for a drone flight over the construction site and see how much has changed since the previous update.
