The beautiful medieval town of Aigues-Mortes in the Camargue region of southern France between Montpellier and Marseille. From our point of view it is one of the most beautiful and one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe
The construction of the city began around 1240 at the royal request of Louis IX. The goal was for the French kingdom to have a port on the Mediterranean at all. At that time, the sea reached up to the city walls, hence the old lighthouse construction on top of the round tower in the northwest. By the way, you can walk around the city walls completely
During the day and in the evening, these alleys are quite crowded with tourists. The stores around the main connecting alleys from city gate to city gate are therefore also completely designed for tourism.
In the evening, a celebratory atmosphere arises on the squares in the city, no wonder in this medieval ambience
Only from the Aerial View you can see the true size of Aigues-Mortes, the dimensions are huge. The region was already inhabited in 102 BC. By the way, Aigues-Mortes was the starting point of the crusades of King Louis IX in 1248 and in 1270.
Why is the water in the Camargue pink?
It's because of the salt production, above a salt content of 180g per litre, however, the brine shrimps die off - the green alga Dunaliella Salina thus no longer has any natural predators and therefore colours the highly concentrated salt water in the salt marshes pink due to its beta-carotene content.
