Day 3. Shibuya.
Our Hotel for the next 2 days is the Mustard Hotel in Shibuya. It is in a new development Call Shibuya Bridge that is build on the old Tōkyū Setagaya Line. This explains why the buildings are long and curved which results in THE Hallway.
The decoration of the hotel is utilitarian minimalist. There are no art or carpet or upholstered furniture in the hotel. In the room we stayed in is a bunk bed, A steel stool, a plywood end table and a steel sink with mirror. there are labels on the wall and furniture identifying the item and it's dimensions, which is as close to decor as it gets here. the color pallet is institutional white and the floor is latex painted concrete. Despite the minimal decor, the bunk bed is comfortable, pillow supportive and the room painfully clean, except for our mess. The hotel website did said "we motivate you not to stay in your hotel room, but to go out and fully enjoy the city." So yea, the room does exactly that.
But, for me, the main attraction is the hallway. It is curved, it is long, it is plain white, it is lit by two rows of florescent lights so it is bright. the floor is smooth, hard and cold. inviting is not a word I'd use to describe this hallway. The hallway is a metaphor for life. It's shocking and harsh but it is between where you are, your room, and where you want to go, the bathroom, and the outside world. you don't want to go to the hallway but you have to so you can go somewhere else.
