Android XR is Google's new mixed-reality operating system designed to power the next generation of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices. Here's everything you need to know.

Developed in collaboration with Samsung, the Android XR platform aims to integrate advanced AI features, such as real-time language translation and seamless app integration, to enhance user experiences.

Android XR

Google has introduced Android XR, a new platform designed specifically for extended reality (XR) devices like headsets and glasses. This open, unified platform aims to provide users with a wider selection of devices and seamless access to familiar apps. For developers, Android XR offers a cohesive environment to create experiences across various devices using established Android tools and frameworks.

A key feature of Android XR is its integration with Gemini, Google's advanced AI. This integration enhances XR devices with capabilities such as real-time language translation, contextual assistance, and memory retention, making interactions more intuitive and immersive.

Samsung's Project Moohan

Samsung's Project Moohan is a mixed-reality headset that combines AR and VR. The headset takes design and software inspiration from the Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro, featuring a sturdy strap, eye-tracking, pancake lenses, and an ergonomic build - similar in comfort to the Quest Pro.

While its field of view and lens quality aren’t as advanced as some competitors, Moohan stands out with AI integration. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, it offers real-time assistance, memory retention, and immersive features, making it a strong player in the mixed reality market.

The device features a design reminiscent of ski goggles and incorporates an external battery pack connected via USB-C. Project Moohan relies on hand tracking for user interaction, eliminating the need for traditional VR controllers.

Sony Creator's Vision

Sony's mixed reality headset is the Sony Creator's Vision, powered by Google's Android XR platform. This device is specifically designed for content creators, offering advanced features to enhance creative workflows. Key highlights include high-resolution displays, precise eye-tracking, and seamless integration with popular creative software.

The headset aims to provide an immersive environment for tasks such as 3D modeling, virtual production, and interactive design. By leveraging Android XR, Sony ensures compatibility with a wide range of applications, making it a versatile tool for professionals in the creative industry.

HTC Vive team up with Android XR

Google has announced that engineers from HTC Vive are joining the Android XR team to accelerate the platform's development across headsets and glasses. HTC is known for innovative hardware designs, such as the Vive XR Elite's convertible headset-to-glasses feature and the Vive Focus Vision's removable battery and DisplayPort connectivity.

However, HTC has faced challenges with its software ecosystem. This collaboration aims to combine HTC's hardware expertise with Android XR's software capabilities, potentially leading to more advanced and user-friendly XR devices.
