Sergio Sanchez Santamaria who was born in Tlayacapan, Morelos, Mexico in 1976 is a print maker, muralist and illustrator. He studied at the great “La Esmeralda”, Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura, y Grabado in Mexico City, counting among his teachers, Alberto Beltrán, Francisco Moreno Capdevila and Adolfo Mexiac. A master of wood and lino cuts, mezzotint and lithography, he works in the tradition of Posada and Mendez but with a modern sensibility and contemporary take on the customs, politics, and people of Mexico.
Santamaria has won awards in Mexico, Belgium and Sweden for his work. His solo exhibitions include galleries and museums in Mexico, the United States, Japan, Poland and Russia and he has traveled to many of these countries as an artist in residence. While exhibiting and teaching at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire, he executed a large mural with the help of students. His book illustrations cover a wide range of subjects and as an inveterate book lover, Sergio has made the creation of personal ex-libris as both a commercial endeavor and a passion.
