The Certosa di Bologna is a historic monumental cemetery created in 1801 on the site of a former 14th-century Carthusian monastery. Originally founded in 1334, the monastery’s buildings, including the Church of San Girolamo, were transformed after Napoleonic suppression into a public cemetery known for its rich funerary art and architecture.

Covering about 30 hectares, the Certosa features cloisters, porticoes, sculptures, painted tombs, and neoclassical monuments, giving it the feel of an open-air museum. It includes the graves of many notable Italian figures and has been visited by writers such as Byron and Dickens. The cemetery is also connected to the Portico di San Luca, part of Bologna’s UNESCO-listed heritage.
