Selfoss and Dettifoss Waterfalls in Iceland
Selfoss and Dettifoss are two of the most stunning and powerful waterfalls in Iceland, located in the Vatnajökull National Park in the northeast part of the country.
Selfoss Waterfall:
Height: Approximately 11 meters (36 feet).
Width: Spreads over a wide area, creating a picturesque curtain of water.
Features: Known for its scenic beauty, Selfoss is often visited in conjunction with Dettifoss due to its proximity. The waterfall is fed by the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which originates from the Vatnajökull glacier.
Dettifoss Waterfall:
Height: About 44 meters (144 feet).
Width: Roughly 100 meters (330 feet).
Features: Dettifoss is renowned as Europe’s most powerful waterfall, with an impressive flow rate that creates a thunderous roar and a mist visible from a distance. The sheer force of the water cascading over the edge into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is a spectacular sight.
Both waterfalls are accessible by hiking trails, and they offer breathtaking views that showcase the raw natural power and beauty of Icelandic landscapes. Visitors to these sites are often struck by the contrasting characteristics of the two falls—Selfoss with its tranquil, wide cascade and Dettifoss with its dramatic, thundering power.
