Melissani Cave, also known as the Melissani Lake Cave, is a geological and archaeological site located on the island of Kefalonia in Greece. Discovered in 1951, it was opened to the public in 1963 and has since become a popular tourist attraction.
Located near the town of Sami, Melissani Cave was formed by geological processes dissolving limestone over thousands of years. One unique feature is an underground lake with crystal blue waters partially exposed to the open sky from the collapsed cave roof. This creates a captivating interplay of light and color as sunlight enters the cave.
The cave is approximately 100 meters long by 40 meters wide. The underground lake has a diameter of 30-40 meters with depths ranging 1-20 meters depending on season. Visitors can take guided boat tours to explore the lake and experience the cave's ethereal beauty as they're rowed across the serene waters.
Named after the mythological nymph Melissani who drowned here, archaeological excavations reveal traces of ancient human activity suggesting the cave held cultural significance. Melissani Cave is open to tourists from late spring to early autumn. It's a good idea to check opening hours and accessibility details before visiting.
Filmed with a VR camera in stunning 4K+ resolution, this video offers 360° views so viewers can virtually experience Melissani Cave's tranquility as if actually there. The unique perspective provides an immersive experience of the Cave.
